Background: I initially... read more purchased my home in 2007 during the height of the housing market with the average mortgage interest rates being over 6%. A year later the housing bubble burst and my loan was greater than the value of my home. Several years later the housing market stabilized, and interest rates started to drop. My current mortgages rate was 6.5% with an additional interest only loan over 11% with a final balloon payment at its 10-year point. Since I was not familiar with the refi process, I initially contacted a big-name mortgage lender advertised on TV/Internet to see what they had to offer and started the refi process with the big named lender but felt that I should shopped around a little more. I contacted Alan and liked what he had to offer, and he also educated me on VA Refi process, I liked the professional and courteous way that Alan and his team conducted themselves and made the decision to go with Alan and his team vice the big mortgage lender. Alan and his team combined both of my mortgage loans and got me a rate of 3.5% (huge long-term savings). Alan and his team handled my VA Refi three additional times, each time getting me the best possible rate with very little to no money out of my pocket. Year - Rate 2014 - 3.50% 2016 - 3.25% 2017 - 3.00% 2020 - 2.25% If interest rates ever get below my current rate of 2.25%, I will definitely be contacting Alan and his team to handle my VA Refi again. Alan and his team are very knowledgeable and efficient. His newsletters are very insightful and informative. All of the costs, fees, rates and loan parameters were crystal clear right up front, and nothing changed at the last minute. Alan found us home mortgage loans with very competitive rates, at the low end of what was available at the time, according to our own independent research. Closing was accomplished on time and with no hiccups. In 2020 HMC went above and beyond late on a Friday afternoon to make sure that we received the very low interest rate that we hoped for. We recently worked with Alan and Maura at Hawaii Mortgage Company to finance our condo purchase in Kona. My wife and I moved from Atlanta to Kona to find... read more our special home - we have been visiting Kona since 1980 - and wanted to make sure we found just the right property – and the lowest mortgage interest rate. Selling our home in Atlanta provided us with decent equity but our monthly income was a challenge in financing the condo loan. We loved working with Alan and his team for 3 reasons: 1) He saved us money. Interest rates were in a state of flux after a recent Fed rate reduction – Alan searched and found the lowest rate available (I know, having checked with 3 local Hawaii banks and 2 national lenders) – with a minimal amount of loan points. He communicated daily (we were still in Atlanta) via phone and email and recommended we lock in a particular rate and loan before things changed again. He was right on – a check of rates during a 90 period confirms that we obtained the lowest/best mortgage rate available during that entire period. Alan was able to craft a loan that successfully combined our equity and monthly income situation into the best deal possible. 2) Experience in the Mortgage business – and specifically the Hawaii market. We learned quickly that the Hawaii real estate and mortgage business is very different compared to how business is done on the mainland. Alan and his team’s experience moved us through the entire mortgage process with a minimum of disruption and confusion. He managed loans for several other units in our condo development, so he was familiar with the Condo Association and their specific requirements, which saved us a lot of time and hassle during the loan application process. 3) Outstanding Communication and Customer Service. Our primary contact throughout the loan application was Maura – she was fantastic! She was very often the “middleman” in the process, forwarding information requests from the lender and other vendors. Maura was prompt, accurate and flexible as we jumped through hoops to meet all the requirements. The entire loan application process was done via the phone, including sharing financial statements, signing documents & providing other documentation. Maura retained her sense of humor while guiding us through the entire process from beginning to a successful, happy ending. Thank you, Maura! So, if you need a new mortgage or are looking to re-finance, you should call Alan at Hawaii Mortgage Company – he will do you right!
